Dana Yost’s significant journalism awards:

2007:  

Editor of the Marshall (Minn.) Independent, a daily paper that won 15 Minnesota Associated Press Association Awards, including several first-place awards, and second place continuing news coverage for a series of stories about 12 area teens who died in separate car crashes in 2006.

In the Minnesota Newspaper Association contest, the Independent won 12 awards, including second in General Excellence in its circulation category, and second in community leadership. Yost placed first in the editorial portfolio category, based on a collection of editorials for the year.

2006:

• Editor of Marshall Independent staff that won 21 Minnesota Associated Press Association 2006 Awards, including the prestigious Freedom of Information Award. Yost earned individual first-place awards for page one and feature page designs.

In the Minnesota Newspaper Association contest, the Independent won 15 awards, including, first place in General Excellence and first place in General Reporting in its circulation category. Yost earned first-place finishes in the page one and feature page design categories. The Independent finished second among all dailies/all sizes in the annual overall MNA award rankings (behind the larger St. Cloud Times).

2005: 

• Minnesota Associated Press Association contest

Freedom of Information: First place

Elements of Excellence (awarded to an individual writer for a single story about about a political issue or personality): Yost placed first and second. Yost also earned first places in page one and feature page design.

• Minnesota Newspaper Association contest

Editor of Marshall Independent staff that placed first in General Excellence and first in several other categories.

Yost finished first in the daily paper best columnist category.

2004:

• Minnesota Associated Press Association contest

Editor of Marshall Independent news staff that won 12 awards, including front-page design, feature-page design and the Freedom of Information Award. In individual awards, Yost swept the top two spots in Elements of Excellence Category for stories on politics.

• Minnesota Newspaper Association contest

Editor of Marshall Independent staff that won seven first-places, including General Excellence. Yost also won the best-columnist award for daily papers.

• The Independent also earned two Associated Press national citations.

2003:

•Minnesota Associated Press Association contest

Editor of Marshall Independent news staff that won 19 awards. One of the AP awards was for Public Service; only one award was given for all three circulation categories.

• Minnesota Newspaper Association contest

Editor of Marshall Independent staff that won seven awards.

• Yost also earned the prestigious annual Journalism Accountability Award from the Minnesota News Council.

2002:

Editor of Marshall Independent news staff that won 12 awards in the Minnesota Associated Press Association annual contest, and four more awards in the annual Minnesota Newspaper Association contest.

2001:

• Editor of Marshall Independent news staff that won six awards in the Minnesota Associated Press Association contest, including first place in its circulation category for coverage of Sept. 11 attacks. The Independent won three awards in Minnesota Newspaper Assocation contest, including first for general reporting.

• The Independent also won a national Associated Press citation.

2000:

• Minnesota Associated Press Association contest

Editor of Marshall Independent news staff that placed first for continuing coverage, for reporting on a deadly, destructive tornado in Granite Falls, Minn. Granite Falls tornado. Overall, the staff won nine AP awards.

1998-99:

While editor of the West Central Tribune in Willmar, Minn., Yost earned first- and second-place awards in Minnesota Associated Press, Minnesota Newspaper Association and Society of Professional Journalists contests for front-page designs.

1998:

At West Central Tribune, Yost earned first-place Society of Professional Journalists feature-page award and front-page design awards. He finished first in the Minnesota Associated Press Association contest for front-page design. and second in the Minnesota Newspaper Association contest for front-page design. Yost also placed second in the MNA contest for an individual story on the 1997 Midwest floods, and helped the West Central Tribune staff finish second as a whole in the Associated Press contest for its flood coverage.

1996:

First-place feature page design in Society of Professional Journalists contest.

1994: 

Yost was news editor and one of the reporter/writers on Marshall Independent staff that placed first in the Minnesota Associated Press Association contest for continuing coverage, for its reporting on the nationwide Schwan’s ice cream salmonella outbreak.

1993: 

As news editor in Marshall, helped staff win a national Associated Press citation for its coverage of severe flooding. As assistant sports editor at the Sioux Falls (S.D.) Argus Leader, Yost won a first-place award for outstanding sports reporting for a story on a 1960s high school basketball star now living homeless on a reservation.

1989:

As sports editor at the Marshall Independent, he was named Minnesota’s sports columnist of the year, non-metro dailies, in the Minnesota Associated Press Association contest.

1987: 

Sports editor of the Marshall Independent sports staff that placed second overall among daily papers in General Excellence in the Minnesota Newspaper Association contest.

1985: 

As writer at the Marshall Independent, Yost won the first-place award in the Minnesota Associated Press Association contest for spot news, sports reporting.
